about us

About the Organization

Every year, the MMK Foundation, an Indian non-profit organisation dedicated to social development, directly benefits over 1000 children and their families. We have active welfare programmes in over 20 distant villages and urban slums in Tamil Nadu, India, focusing on education, healthcare, livelihood, and women's empowerment.

Education lays the foundation for a better life. It is the most effective catalyst for societal change. A youngster, on the other hand, cannot be educated in solitude. Only a strong family, particularly the mother, will agree to educate their child. We believe in a lifelong strategy rather than focusing on just one period of a person's life.

Education allows a person to earn a living while simultaneously increasing their awareness of a variety of concerns. The MMK Foundation works to educate, empower, and grow better citizens in a variety of areas, including healthcare, good social behaviour, and recognising one's rights.

Our Vision

All our activities centre on our vision, which serves as a vital guiding light. It expresses our purpose as a social enterprise and acts as a yardstick for evaluating our approach. To achieve the vision, we've taken the following steps:

Using a life-cycle approach to development, work as a catalyst for lasting change in the lives of underprivileged children, youth, women, and the poor.

Through the philosophy of civic driven change, enable civil society across Tamil Nadu to actively participate in the change process.

Adopt the highest governance standards in order to become a leading international development organisation that is knowledge and technology driven, innovative, and scalable.

Our Mission

The mission of the MMK Foundation, an Indian non-profit organisation, is to empower underprivileged children, youth, women, and the poor by providing relevant education, innovative healthcare, and market-focused livelihood programmes.

To encourage people to take responsibility for the plight of deprived Indian children and to seek solutions through individual and collective action, allowing children to achieve their full potential.

Potential Unleashed

People's potential for action and change is to be discovered.

Collaborative Action Inspiring

Eco-friendly stoves for families in villages

Background

It is now understood that emissions from traditional cook stoves pose a threat bigger than previously thought. The newest health data from WHO estimates that 4.3 million people die annually from household air pollution caused by cooking with biomass and coal. It is the greatest health risk in the world after high blood pressure, tobacco and alcohol. More people are dying from the incremental, ongoing inhalation of smoke from fires they ignite in their homes than from malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.

For over two decades, the Government of India, many State Government departments, Science & Technology Institutes, many public &private enterprises, multi-national energy majors and several NGOs in India have been working independently and also collaborating on various ‘Clean Cook Stove / Smokeless stove Initiatives’, trying to create a positive impact on environmental and social issues.

Smokeless household stoves are more fuel efficient than the conventional stoves with fuel efficiency up to 30%. Annually 500 kg of fuel wood can be saved from each stove. Smokeless household stoves typically consist of 2 pan with 1 fuel feeding port. This requires less space of 2.5 ft x 1.5 feet.

Construction and maintenance is also very easy and any agro waste can be used as fuel.

Our Approach

MMK Foundation has taken an organic approach to the ‘Clean Cook Stove initiatives’ in the rural segment, taking into consideration the social & environmental impact versus business opportunities. MMK Foundation has been engaged in training rural women to build fuel efficient smokeless stoves for themselves and in their neighborhoods and to create smoke free kitchens in rural Tamilnadu. It has been popularizing the Vahni (Travels with wind) stove as a fuel-efficient smokeless wood burning stove.

The Vahni stove is built using a mould (made of MS) and uses locally available materials like mud, bricks and an AC chimney pipe. The cost of the stove including grate and chimney is less than Rs 1000 (less than USD 15) and this includes the amount paid to the woman stove builder for stove construction.

Recently, MMK Foundation has developed a larger version of the Vahni stove, ideal for use in mid day meal cooking and institutional cooking.

MMK Foundation has developed a comprehensive Awareness cum training program on Vahni stove construction. We have also come out with a short video version of the same. We are happy to partner with other grass root agencies and communities to adopt these stoves for different regions and to ensure wider dissemination of these stoves to different communities across India. However we suggest that such dissemination / requests are routed through us to ensure that the stoves meet the local needs appropriately, in terms of technology. MMK Foundation can also facilitate construction of stoves through women trained by us already.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION'S

story

Background

We at the MMK Foundation believe in the power of working together for the greater good. We collaborate to build a strong collective action to transform India.

We have several options for NGOs, corporates, and educational institutions to collaborate with us in order to accelerate social change.

Only strong global partnerships and cooperation will allow the SDGs to be realised. A successful development agenda necessitates inclusive partnerships based on principles and values, as well as a shared vision and shared goals that put people and the planet first.

Jack Kerouac said, “One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.” This perfectly sums up what you must do to create thoughtful, effective awards. The right words are the words that communicate not only the what, but the why: why do you appreciate this person so much? And the words must be simple enough to say what you mean in a limited amount of space.
